NJ Uncommitted Campaign Scores Over 43,000 Votes
thousands of New Jersey Democrats prefer "Free Palestine" to Joe Biden
“More than 40,000 people voted for the “uncommitted” ballot option in Tuesday’s Democratic primary election, signaling growing unrest over President Biden and his military aid for Israel.”
Thanks to the work of activists across New Jersey, Democratic primary voters in all but a few shore counties were confronted by these options on their ballots. This means that New Jersey will be sending at least one delegate pledged to oppose Biden to the 2024 Democratic national convention.
political notes:
This is a major political blow to Biden, because it shows his deep unpopularity with his own base. With primary season almost over, “more than half a million” Democrats have voted uncommitted. Now the ball is in the Democratic court; will they listen to voters and abandon Biden and his disastrous policy towards Israel; or will they continue to ignore their base?
Whatever the Dems do, the uncommitted movement has seized the initiative. The resistance in Gaza has inspired us to adopt new tactics against the two parties of war and Wall Street. However, now that the votes have been cast now is the time for the uncommitted movement in New Jersey to move forward. We have a responsibility to the people who voted for us to keep organizing.
Our next move should be to organize a state wide “uncommitted” nominating convention to endorse either Jill Stein or Cornel West in New Jersey. We should also consider nominating other pro Palestine candidates down ballot. These conventions should be open to all voters who agree with our principles, not just those who voted uncommitted.
Now that our fight is no longer trapped within the confines of the Democratic Party, we should reach out to independents and Republicans. We should especially challenge the “pro-life” movement who care about fetus’s but not the real babies Israel is murdering in Gaza. We have a political responsibility to reject the two party dichotomy; because Palestine needs everyone; not just those we feel comfortable talking to. That doesn’t mean we should sacrifice our principles, or chase Republicans who don’t want to hear our message but we write off half the country.
